# How do email notifications work

*Learn when Crisp sends email notifications for unread conversations, who receives them, and where to manage the setting.*

Email notifications are a fallback notification channel in Crisp. They help you catch pending visitor messages when nobody has opened the conversation in time, without flooding your inbox while your team is already active in the app.

Crisp waits **3 minutes** before sending an email notification for a pending unread message. If the message is opened before that delay ends, no email notification is sent.

This delay keeps email useful without making it noisy. When your team is already using the [**Crisp web app**](https://app.crisp.chat), the desktop app, or the mobile app, you can answer from Crisp directly instead of receiving an email for every new message.

| Email notifications should be seen as a last-resort way to catch pending messages. For daily work, the [Web, Desktop, and Mobile apps](https://crisp.chat/apps/) are usually faster and more reliable.

Only one operator receives the email notification for a pending message.

__Crisp chooses the recipient in this order:__
* **Assigned operator** → if the conversation is already assigned, that operator receives the notification, whether they are online or offline
* **Online operators** → if no operator is assigned, Crisp notifies one available online operator
* **Offline operators** → if no operator is online, Crisp notifies one offline operator

Each team member manages this setting from their own account. Changing it only affects your personal email notifications, not the whole workspace.

__To enable or disable email notifications:__
* Go to [**Crisp**](https://app.crisp.chat)
* Open **Settings** from the bottom-left corner
* Navigate to **Settings → Account → Notifications → Email Notifications**
* Enable or disable the email notification option

|| Disabling this option only stops email notifications for new unread messages. Other automated emails, such as assignment emails like **"You have been assigned to a conversation"**, are not disabled from this setting.

Some system emails, such as onboarding emails, are part of Crisp's default account flow. They cannot currently be disabled from the notification settings or unsubscribe page, and stop automatically once the sequence is completed.

Once email notifications are configured, you may also want to review your browser and app notifications so Crisp matches the way you work.
