How to add and link a payment method
Learn how to add a new payment method in Crisp and connect it to the right workspace.
When a card expires, a PayPal account changes, or a new teammate takes over billing, adding the payment method is only the first step. You also need to link it to the correct workspace so Crisp can charge the right subscription and make invoices available to the right billing owner.
Add the payment method
To start, go to Crisp, then open Settings → Billing → Cards.
Only a workspace owner can add or manage payment methods. The Crisp account that owns the payment method becomes the billing owner for the workspaces linked to it, which means only that account can access card details and invoices.
From Settings → Billing → Cards, add your new payment method:
- Click Add new payment method
- Choose the payment method you want to use
- Fill in the required billing details
- Complete any bank verification step, such as 3DS, when requested
You can check which methods are supported here: What are the payment methods supported by Crisp?

The billing details added here are used on invoices. You can also add an invoice recipient email, such as your accountant's mailbox, so both the billing owner and the accounting contact receive future receipts.
Link the workspace to the payment method
A Crisp account can manage several workspaces and several payment methods. After adding a payment method, make sure the correct workspace is attached to it.
Go to Crisp, then open Settings → Workspace Settings → Billing Settings for the workspace you want to update.
In the workspace billing settings:
- Unlink the old payment method if needed
- Select the new card, PayPal account, or other supported payment method
- Save the billing change

Once the workspace is linked, Crisp will automatically try to charge the subscription within the next two hours. You will receive an email once the charge has been processed.
Change the billing owner
The billing owner is the Crisp account that owns the payment method linked to the workspace. To change it, the new billing owner must first add a payment method from their own Crisp account.
To transfer billing ownership cleanly:
- Ask the new billing owner to go to Settings → Billing → Cards and add their payment method
- Open the target workspace from Settings → Workspace Settings → Billing Settings
- Link the workspace to the new payment method
Once the workspace is attached to the new payment method, that account becomes the billing owner. New invoices will be available from the new billing owner account, while older invoices may remain tied to the previous billing owner.
Troubleshoot an invalid card
If your card is marked as Invalid, the issue is usually related to bank validation, expired card data, available funds, or the wrong payment method being linked to the workspace.
3DS validation failed
The bank verification may not have completed correctly. Open Crisp in an incognito window, go to Settings → Billing → Cards, remove the card, then add it again.
This helps when a browser extension or preference blocked the verification modal the first time.
The card is expired or detected as expired
If the card expiration date is correct but Crisp still marks it as invalid, remove the card and add it again. This refreshes the validation status with the payment processor.
The card has insufficient funds
Make sure the card is active and has enough funds for the subscription charge. New cards sometimes need to be activated by the bank before online payments are accepted.
The bank blocked the authorization
Some banks block recurring subscription payments or international authorizations by default. Contact your bank and ask them to authorize the Crisp payment.
The wrong card is linked to the workspace
If several teammates manage billing, confirm that the valid payment method is linked to the correct workspace in Settings → Workspace Settings → Billing Settings.
