How to change agent roles (Owner vs Member)

Learn how to switch a Crisp agent between Owner and Member, and how each role affects workspace permissions.

Crisp workspaces use roles to control who can manage sensitive settings. Owners can administer the workspace, while Members can work in the Inbox without having access to every critical configuration option.

Change an agent role

Only an Owner can change another agent's role. Use this setting when a teammate needs more or less access to workspace administration features.

To change an agent role:

  • Go to Crisp
  • Open Settings from the bottom-left corner
  • Navigate to Settings → Workspace Settings → Operators and Teams
  • Click Member or Owner next to the agent to toggle their role

Understand Owner permissions

An Owner can perform administrative and sensitive actions on the workspace. Keep this role limited to trusted teammates who really need it.

Owners can typically:

  • Invite agents → add new teammates to the workspace
  • Change roles → switch agents between Member and Owner
  • Configure the workspace → update workspace-wide settings and important options
  • Manage plugins → add and configure integrations or plugins
  • Manage campaigns → use and send campaigns
  • Delete the workspace → access destructive workspace actions

Avoid making the whole team Owner. Keep ownership limited to a small set of trusted users, and encourage Owners to enable two-factor authentication.

Understand Member permissions

A Member is a regular agent. Members can use Crisp for daily support work, but they cannot perform dangerous changes or workspace-wide administrative actions.

Members can typically:

  • Reply to conversations → handle customer messages in the Inbox
  • Create campaigns → prepare campaigns, while Owners keep final sending permissions
  • Write knowledge base articles → contribute to self-service content
  • Configure existing plugins → update plugin settings after an Owner has installed the plugin

Members cannot typically:

  • Add plugins → install new plugins or integrations
  • Invite agents → add new workspace members
  • Change roles → make another agent Owner or Member
  • Send campaigns → publish campaigns without Owner permissions
  • Delete the workspace → access permanent deletion actions
  • Configure critical workspace settings → edit sensitive workspace administration options

Regular agents also cannot delete contacts, messages, and conversations if Prevent non-owner operators to remove data is enabled from Settings → Workspace Settings → Operators and Teams.
